I’m guessing you’re here reading this page because you appreciate my work, and you want to learn how I do it. So I’m going to show you! This workshop is designed to showcase a complete breakdown of my approach to off-camera lighting and how I achieve my results. Now a workshop isn’t a workshop if you’re not getting your hands dirty so not only are you going to see me shoot a demonstration, but you will get to shoot as well. Some beautiful talent will be on hand for you to work with and I’ll play the supervisor role to help expand your photography as much as I can.
At this workshop we will be using both the Godox (AD600/Pro) and Profoto (B1X) battery powered lights and the respective wireless transmitters/receivers from those brands. These are my preferred lighting systems and you can experience both to see what fits you and your budget.
There is a structure and a schedule to my workshops but I am a very laid back person, and my workshops are designed to offer a bit more of an informal, relaxed and personal experience. So ask questions, have fun, and enjoy yourself.
NOTE: In previous years my annual workshop have been specifically glamour based, but I am now moving away from the specifics of glamour and making it a little bit more generic and focused on lighting. The content and principles we cover however, have remained very much the same and we will still look at posing and working with models.
The topic of conversation is off-camera lighting and thats the main focus of this workshop. We will have a look at how I would conduct a photoshoot and how I setup, shape, balance and control light. We are going to look at camera settings and shooting with correct white balance as well as exposure. You will learn to balance multiple lights and balancing those with the ambient light. We will explore all the different lighting modifiers and when to use them. You will get to experience shooting within the limitations of your sync speed (whats that? you’ll learn) as well as above your sync speed with the HSS (High Speed Sync) feature and why you would use each method. I’ll run through all the basics of light and flash and how it shapes everything we do. We will not be using any ETTL systems, this will be all manual lighting. It’s easier than you think!
As I mostly photograph people, I will also dive into one of the most popular topics which is Posing and communicating with your model to get the most out of them.
It’s very difficult to squeeze so much into just one day, so I really hope you come prepared with some questions to help me steer the education in your direction. I have tried to make the day more about you getting hands on and shooting, rather than listening to me talk all day. So be ready to take photos!
We will cover:
Private warehouse location in Fremantle (TBA)
There is plenty of parking directly next door for $8 per day or you may wish to try find alternative free parking.
Obviously a full day stuck with me is a given, along with plenty of water, soft drink and some snacks to keep you going. We will all take a lunch break half way thanks to Subway. Please tell me if you have any special dietary requirements or you are welcome to bring your own lunch if you wish.
All equipment will be supplied by myself and my friends at Camera Electronic.
The model line up is incredible as usual and if the workshop sells out we will have a total of three amazing models joining us. Under my new format you will get to work with all 3 of them! Models will have their hair & make-up done professionally by the amazing Brooke & Megan from BAM Makeup Studio.
The first model which I am happy to announce, is an award-winning state basketball player who has transitioned her talents to the AFLW with the Fremantle Dockers; Gemma Houghton. Gemma is attending as our sports portrait subject!
One lucky winner will be drawn at random to receive a 1 hour one-on-one session with myself to help improve your photography. The best part, is you can choose what you want help with! We can look at your photography techniques on-set or perhaps we can look at the post production side of things to help speed up your workflow.
