Brodie Butler is a West Australian born enthusiast that strives for success in everything he attempts. Having completed a Software Engineering Degree at University and being a freelance Web Developer for many years, Photography was never really on the agenda, let alone considered as a career. However in just a few years the tables turned quite dramatically and Photography became the one thing that Brodie is extremely passionate about.
Brodie first placed his hands on a camera in 2004 and never looked back.
With Brodies’ strong involvement in the automotive scene, Brodie instantly started attending automotive events such as cruises, car shows, and track days and uploaded the photos to his automotive website www.driveline.net.au. The site became increasingly popular especially due to the newborn interest in photography which caused the site to expand and cater for image galleries and his very own feature articles. The feature articles would typically consist of a car and a model, and this is where Brodies’ photography started to branch out into the world of glamour modelling.
Before too long Brodie started working alongside veteran professional automotive Photo-Journalist Rick McDowell, who has been putting W.A. modified cars on Magazine front covers since Brodie only needed two hands to count the candles on the birthday cake. Working alongside Rick offered an opportunity to gain valuable experience learning first hand in the field which is always the best way. It wasn’t long until Brodie became a credible photographer in his own right and began submitting content to the magazines himself.
Modelling photography became an interest of Brodies’ very quickly as he began using models for automotive feature articles on his website. Brodie also became a regular at the many modelling competition events held around Perth both automotive and non-automotive related. From here on, natural progression led Brodie to doing one-on-one glamour modelling photoshoots and it soon grew to be a major contributor to his portfolio of photography work. Brodie is probably most well known for his work over the years shooting some of Perths’ finest models, but Brodie has fulfilled a wide range of photographic requirements from all sorts of different clients throughout different industries. His photographic portfolio has expanded to include officially covering major events such as Tentland @ Perth Cup and the Dutton Rally, venues such as The Eurobar and Cottesloe Hotel, and all sorts of commercial clients such as Top Shelf Entertainment, Fathom Swimwear and Fighter Combat International. Amongst all that Brodie likes to conduct his own personal projects, if he can ever find the time. You can see some of Brodie's clients and affiliates on his portfolio page.
Brodie has embraced the launch of these new video capable HDDSLR's such as the Canon 5D MK II and has taken a pro-active approach to film-making. Being an enthusiastic motion picture fan from a young age these new HDDSLR cameras have given Brodie the opportunity to follow his passion for film-making which wasn't possible until now. Brodie has already filmed a short film currently in post production and is currently working on a small budget feature film here in Western Australia. Brodie has been actively testing all the latest HDSLR camera gear thanks to Camera Electronic and later in the year there are plans to run a HDDSLR Workshop for photographers wanting to take the step over into the moving pitures world with these cameras. Its an exciting transition! Stay Tuned!
Photo Re-Touching & Digital Enhancements
Even before taking on photography Brodie has always known the ropes of digital enhancing images. Being a website developer for years, he was involved in a lot of graphic design and that enabled him to familiarise himself with a lot of the common tools now used in his digital workflow process, such as Photoshop. Once taking on Photography, he has made a point of learning a lot more about the post production techniques associated with photography, and is always researching the latest trends in order to stay ahead of the pack. Brodie even went to the trouble of attending the one and only Photoshop World Conference in Las Vegas during September 2010 to learn from the worlds best. See Brodies' Blog for examples of his photoshop/retouching work.
Anyone looking to expand their knowledge in the world of Photoshop, I would highly recommend becoming a NAPP member. (http://www.brodiebutler.com/blog)
Assistance and Learning
Brodie is happy to attend photoshoots, events or workshops to offer his techniques and opinions to those willing to learn, but it's more about sharing his experience. Brodie does not consider himself a teacher or an expert, he can only share the experience and learning he has been through on his photographic journey, and hope that it will help others.
Brodie runs his very own glamour photography workshops and is looking to expand into automotive photography workshops and also HDDSLR Video Workshops aimed specifically at still photographers. Subscribe to his blog to stay up to date and follow him on twitter @ www.twitter.com/brodiebutler31.
