Wacom Tablet
Last year when I was at Photoshop World in Las Vegas it seemed the number one tool every photoshop guru couldn’t live without was one of these Wacom Intuos4 tablets. I had known about them for some time but I had never considered one, and I have never even seen anyone using them much before back home. I didn’t even recall ever seeing them for sale anywhere but that could have been ignorance on my part.  They are very popular among graphic designers, artists, and now photographers due to the huge adoption of Adobe Photoshop into the post production workflow.

Some people that I spoke to couldn’t even comprehend the fact that I didn’t use one, it was weird. If you were a photoshop user, you used a Wacom and it was as simple as that.  I paid a visit to the Wacom booth after meeting the Wacom team the previous night over a few drinks and they gave me a full demo and I was pretty impressed. I love new gadgets and after a little bit more persuasion from Calvin Hollywood throughout the week I decided to get one.  I had to listen to the guru right?  So I now own a Wacom Intuos4 Medium sized tablet and I’ve been using it for just over a year now.  It fits nicely into my laptop bag, I just slide it in underneath my Laptop, keeping it in its soft cover just to help prevent scratches etc.

I have to say, it was a worthwhile purchase. I love my tablet and I always use it.

Wacom pen settingsI really like the two buttons available to you on the actual pen itself, which can be programmed to perform any function you like, in any application you like. For Photoshop I have set one of them up as the undo function so I can quickly step back any changes I don’t like since I’m always making mistakes.  I do a lot of retouching, and I use the clone stamp, healing brush and brushes in general a lot so I have changed the other button to be a custom modifier. I programmed it to perform a CTRL + OPTION + CLICK. This is a fairly new feature of photoshop, and by moving the pen left or right, I can now change my brush size. By moving the mouse up or down, I can change the hardness of the brush. This is one of the most common actions I need to perform so it speeds up my retouching enormously!   Check this out, you can even invert the pen and use the other end as an eraser! How cool is that!

You can use the tablet in right hand or left hand mode. The buttons on the tablet itself have an LED display which tells you what they each do. You can quickly and easily configure the tablet to display in left hand mode and the LED display flips itself. This was handy for me since I am left handed! I tried to use my right hand since I’m pretty good on the mouse with my right hand, but holding the pen is a whole different story. I had to switch to my left hand. All of these buttons by the way, can be customised to be whatever you want.

Dual Screen user? Me to. Don’t panic, the tablet caters for multiple screens. You can choose to map your tablet to both screens, or just a single screen. It’s really good that way.

There is a new dial on the tablet which is reminiscient of an ipod dial. It works well for zooming in and out and changing your brush sizes but it can be configurable to anything you want. That’s the best part about the tablet, you can make any button do anything you want.

I bought the USB version, but there is also a wireless version available for some extra dollars.

So a year on, I have to say I really love this tablet. I have always used it for my post production work.  I never really understood how much I loved it until I went back to using the mouse. I will use the mouse for all of about 30 seconds and then I will grab my Wacom tablet back out and use that. It really is much more efficient. I often catch myself using it for everything after I have just done some post production work, but I do eventually switch back to the mouse for general tasks as I want my Wacom to last.

How do you have your Wacom tablet setup?

I’m always looking for creative new ways to use my Wacom, so I’d love to hear how you have set your’s up and what custom functions you used! Drop a comment!

So I’m a big tablet fan, you can go out and get yours from Camera Electronic. Give them a ring on +61 8 9328-4405

Today I am putting my feelers out there in the Perth community to see if anyone is willing to help me locate some studio space (or any large office/warehouse space) for a 2-day workshop.  I know I’m well overdue to run another workshop and I’m very sorry but this is not actually for one of mine. This is actually for someone else far more exciting!  An international world renowned photographer/retoucher friend of mine is coming to visit Australia for the first time and he wants to visit little old me here in Perth. I can tell you first hand he was one of the most popular instructors I’ve seen at the Photoshop World Conference in 2010.

Now, Perth is an long and expensive trip to make for a single workshop, so it’s the same old “we have no budget” story. Usually in all the countries he has visited around the world he has been fortunate enough to have a studio provided or sponsored for him, however the one thing I don’t have is a studio.

We intend to run a two day workshop, consisting of shooting with different lighting setups along with a retouching session and presentation. We do need a bit of room to move and setup multiple lighting setups if possible. We also need the ability to use a projector and have table and chairs to fit up to 15-20 people. It would be held over a weekend. Originally it was to be late 2011, but it is likely to be pushed into 2012. The date is not set yet.

I would be very grateful and interested to speak to anyone that might be able to help me and I’d love to know if there is anything I could do for you in return.

I will release further details when we are a bit closer to a confirmation on the event going forward.

Please contact me by email on brodie@brodiebutler.com with details on you and your studio.

Photoshop World Las Vegas 2010

What a huge first day, and it isn’t even over yet! The training has finished for the day but there are still some activities to take part in. Personally, I am going to be attending the After Party @ the House of Blues located in the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino which is also where I’m staying.  Before we get to that though, you can probably notice from the photo above there was a KISS theme for the opening keynote and it was hilarious. The entire keynote presentation was really well done and it was good to hear from some Adobe head-honchos.

Calvin Hollywood InstructingAttended some really good classes including Calvin Hollywood and Russell Brown’s presentation where I was also napping a few Behind The Scenes pictures for Calvin. The classroom was packed out which was great! I took a bunch of pictures which I will post probably tomorrow in another blog post.

So the after party looks to be a very interesting night with some food and drink provided and a chance to meet a few more people from this great event. I’ll check back in and finish this post when I get back…

…. few hours go by…. then a few more ….

Well I was going to finish this post off once I returned from the after party to wrap up day one, however things didn’t quite go to plan. I just got back to my hotel room and its 6:30am the following day, but what a night! I guess that’s the effect of Vegas for you! So with my travel buddy Natalie, and Calvin Hollywood we attended the after party as planned and it was great! The food was actually pretty tasty and we were able to get a few free drinks!  Plus Scott Kelby and the gang put on a fun performance with their band that rocked the house. It was really interesting to meet a few more people such as the great Wacoom staff, which by the way sold me on a new Wacom Intuos4 tablet. Met some other great folks including a young budding photographer Jake Peterson (yes, son of legendary wildlife photographer; Moose) and Im really enjoying some of his aviation photography work, check out his blog here. Also had a nice chat with photoshop guru Matt Kloskowski and I met Nick Saglimbeni from Slickforce Studios too.  So after the after party, lets just say things started getting a little bit messy and i’ll leave it at that. Now when is the best time to gamble? When you’re completely intoxicated of course! So a couple of us were off to the Luxor poker tables to have a bit of a gamble. Against all odds and what you might think, it actually turned out to be a good idea! I doubled up on my money!

More from me in the coming days direct from Photoshop World in Las vegas.

Brodie is going to Hollywood!
Well my bags are packed and I’m about to fall asleep on my very own bed for the last time before I wake up tomorrow and take on Hollywood with my partner in L.A. Crime and PerthsBestGirls founder; Natalie! You know… right after that painful 21 hour journey across the Pacific.  I am heading over to L.A. to catch up with my buddy (psst…and recent award winning director!)  A.J. Carter and to celebrate his upcoming birthday which might have to entail a trip to Vegas. Speaking of Vegas one of the other main reasons for me hiking across the globe is to attend Photoshop World. If you’re now asking yourself “What’s Photoshop World?” then you need a kick in the butt and need to do some research.  Here’s something to get you started: http://photoshopworld.com.  It’s basically the biggest Photoshop conference in the world, and its more than just an expo. Photoshop World is 3 days of intense training and workshops, learning from all the worlds best which includes the likes of Joe McNally, Scott Kelby, Dave Cross and more. Its heavily based around photography. Anyway, its a real massive opportunity for me to go and I’m so fortunate that my bank account has been able to withstand the violent beating it received to actually do it.

So I will touch down in Los Angeles this afternoon at 5:10pm L.A. time, which will be well into Tuesday for you Aussies. I will be keeping my blog up to date and my facebook and twitter will be going ballistic with updates and photos, and I rekon I’ll manage a few videos too.

I have some amazing fun photohoots lined up on my trip which I cant wait for you all to see, including one lucky spot helping alongside the talented Calvin Hollywood who is actually an insturctor at Photoshop World this year. It will be a great experience to meet Calvin and everyone else at the event and I look forward to soaking up as much as I can because there will be a serious amount of talent there. It’s going to be so much fun.

Once I’m done in L.A and Vegas I will be heading back down under to Sydney where I have some more hot photoshoots planned! Then come the end of September, its back to Perth, and back to work.

Stay tuned folks and Happy Shooting.
