At Paramount Studios today in Hollywood, the much anticipated press release took place and Canon have revealed their new EOS C300 cinema video in front of the film industry elite.

The camera can come with either a PL or EF mount but not both unfortunately. It utilises a Super 35mm sensor and allows for timecode, has HD-SDI outputs and two CF card slots. So its a big step up from the 5D and designed to compete with the other digital cinema cameras out there. The general consensus seems across the net at the moment seems to be that Canon have arrived with too little, too late, for too much.

You can read plenty more about the announcements today on the Planet5D blog here: http://blog.planet5d.com/2011/11/canon-announces-new-canon-eos-c300-video-camera/

You will also want to keep an eye on what Jared Abrams is posting on WideOpenCamera: http://wideopencamera.com/blog/

As you all know Vincent Laforet is a full fledged Director of Photography now and very close to Canon, s of course he has been out shooting with the C300 before its announcement to test it in the field. Check out this film Mobius below along with some behind the scenes. I absolutely love the film. The style of the story is exactly the kind of story I love. Check it out.

Check this out. It’s Ken Blocks latest gymkhana video filmed at Universal Studios in Hollywood. It caught my eye because I was there less than a year ago and recognised a lot of the scenes.

Check out a couple of photos I took below. They should be a bit familiar after watching the video!

Hollywood Sign Photography

Hollywood Sign Photos

Well I’ve been here in Hollywood for over a week now and it’s been so much fun. I’ve managed to squeeze a lot of activities into just one week. Done all the major sight-seeing stuff including a trip to Venice Beach and Santa Monica where a great deal of shopping was done. Armani Exchange over here makes Red-Dot at home look expensive. (Red Dot is a really cheap $2 type store). The exchange rate today just went to approx. 94 cents to the US dollar so it’s a perfect time to be here. Universal Studios was an awesome day full of rides and great shows I highly recommend it for tourists visiting L.A. I have to say a big thank you to A.J. Carter and Ilusha Zaritskiy who have effectively been our very own tour guides for myself and traveling partner in crime; Natalie. Who is this Natalie you speak of Brodie? Well thats her above sporting a hot white dress in front of the Hollywood sign.

There’s no green screen nonsense happening here folks, thats about as close as you can get to the Hollywood sign and about the best picture you can get. This location is not really accessible by the public and you will probably get towed very quickly if you park anywhere near it, that is, if you can actually find it. We were very lucky to have our local contacts to get this shot.  It had to be very much a run and gun shoot. We were in and out in just a few minutes. This meant I could only take some bare essentials. My Canon 5DMKII with a 24-70mm lens attached, and I used a Yongnuo wireless transmitter in the hot-shoe, which was speaking to a receiver attached to a 580EXII.  The sun was beaming down from camera left, so I positioned the 580EXII to camera right (thanks to my assistant) on half power to try and balance things out a bit. It did a lot better than I was expecting. I suppose I didn’t have any modifiers on the flash so that helped me get a bit more punch out of it.

Here’s a couple of silly shots we took of Natalie’s Entourage including myself. These have all been victim to a few custom lightroom adjustments to spice them up a bit. The image at the top of this post was lucky enough to receive some photoshop as well.

You know what I forgot to do though? I didnt take any images of just the sign! I’ve only got all of us idiots in the foreground! Maybe we can give CS5′s content aware fill a try. har har.

Happy Shooting

Ronan's Escape

Ronan’s Escape, a short film by a close friend of mine A.J. Carter  (who is atually responsible for the very handy camera work in our latest glamour sensations video HERE) has just won another huge award over in the U.S. Ronan’s Escape picked up ‘Best International Short Film’ at the 6th annual Hollyshorts Films Festival, in Hollywood California.

Not so long ago the film also picked up the ‘Best Short Film’ award at the 2010 Sedona Film Festival in America too.  Not bad for a Perth film production eh? Yes thats right, lil ol’ Perth has the talent to do great things too.

A massive congratulations to A.J and his sister Jennifer, Luke and everyone else involved in the film, it was such a deserved win and so good to know all that hard work, blood sweat and tears was all worth it.  I hope the film continues it success and I look forward to seeing the next project!

Check out A.J’s website and blog here: http://www.ajcarterfilms.com/ and of course the website for the award winning short film, http://www.ronansescape.com/

You can see all the red carpet action from the world premiere of the film  which was right here in Perth and thanks to yours truly. See the photos I snapped on the carpet here: http://www.brodiebutler.com/blog/2010/03/shooting-the-red-carpet-for-the-ronans-escape-world-premiere/

This is one for all the HDDSLR video buffs who are getting carried away into the world of moving pictures. Check out this video from Vincent Laforet where he visits the Cine Gear Expo in Hollywood and checks out some very cool gear including the new RED camera! For those that don’t know, Vincent is one of the guys at the forefront of the HDDSLR world and works closely with Canon. He is a longtime professional still photographer who made the transition to moving pictures just a couple years ago upon the release of the 5D MK II.

This video is a hollywood sample reel from Stargate Studios to showcase their Virtual Backlot proprietary technology. For some of you this might come as a suprise as to just how much they use green screening these days and how far technology has come to allow them to do this so seamlessly. The video shows the use of this technology to create entire scenes in green screen and also how they can use it to extend a scene. Its quite amazing.

The same concepts apply in still digital photography, where green screens are also used quite a lot. If you are ever taking photos specifically to extract the person or object out afterwards your best option is to use an evenly lit green screen. White/grey/black studio backdrops are not ideal for extracting things, they are ideal for being included in the photo as a white/grey/black backdrop. White backdrops can make it hard to extract, highlights in your subject can blend into the background which is just one of the problems.

Do the best with what is available to you and learn.
