One of the first things I ever took a photo of with an SLR camera was a moving car on a racetrack. Well it was back to origins this last weekend for the return of Powercruise to Perth. I charged up the gear and loaded up the car to go cover the event for Perth Street Car Magazine. The event started early on Thursday this year which helped avoid the peak hour style of congestion for scrutineering that the event had last year. The weather however was not much help to the event. I finally made it down there on Saturday and come lunch time everyone was ducking for cover. The rain was pouring down. It almost felt like someone was constantly tipping a bucket of water over your head. It only vaguely improved into the evening and it was very tough to try get out on the track and get some shots.
It was comforting to know that the Canon Pro lenses hanging off my 2 x 30D bodies were designed for the rough weather but at the amount they cost you can’t help but want to cover those puppies up under your vest. This isn’t really a critical event that you need to put your gear at risk for.
Normally at big car events I’m shooting absolutely everything in my path, but this weekend I didnt take many frames at all. I specifically covered the Miss Powercruise event which was needed for Perth Street Car Magazine. I also made my way out on the track and I captured some of the drift, some power skids and of course the burnouts. I didnt waste any time with static cars on display or anything like that because I didn’t have the time to be honest.
