Well here we are, at the end of 2011 and what an exciting year it has been!

Aerial Photography of the ocean
I was lucky enough to have started my aerial photography this year, and from my first trip up in the air I managed to nail the front cover of Aviator Magazine Australia with a shot of Darius Pavry’s 300L acrobatic plane in their February 2011 issue. That was certainly exciting. While I was up there I also took a few happy snaps of our beautiful coastline which you can see in this post:  Perth Aerial Photography from a Helicopter. You might also want to check out the little behind the scenes video of it all here: Behind The Scenes In a Helicopter with Perth Photographer Brodie Butler. I couldn’t resist to use that music.

Danny Williamsons S15 feat. Kristal Hammond

It’s been another successful year with Perth Street Car Magazine too for me. This year the magazine took an interest in my behind the scenes videos and we began officially shooting the videos for each issue, starting with this great video of Tims BLOONES Ute and Miss Motorvation winner Gemma Louise. Unfortunately since I am the photographer for the car & model features I can’t film which is highly frustrating. So I have had to put my assistants to work and bring fellow video shooters on board to help out. Big thanks to all of you; Liam Underwood, Kieran Herald, Elliott Vassila, Ralf Schubert, Luke Brooks, Peter Clarke and Ross Metcalf.  You can see the rest of my behind the scenes videos on my youtube channel.  (Latest Issue out now with Danny Williamsons 750HP S15 drift car and Australian beauty Kristal Hammond)

Well I never thought Id say this but I officially became a Director of Photography in the filmmaking game this year. In 2010 I started getting heavily involved with HDSLR cameras and pushed my way forward into the industry and in 2011 I really managed to make a dent, working on a number of projects and even creating some productions of my own.  It’s an exciting time and I look forward to what 2012 brings. My favourite thing was probably something I filmed with Elliot Vassila and actually X Factor star Johnny Ruffo. We set out one Saturday for a few hours of filming and put together a very cool little action film, just to try out some special effects. Check it out here: Point Blank, A short action film with special effects. I also posted about my first official DOP experience with plenty of behind the scenes here: Becoming a Director of Photography PART TWO

Miss Universe Australia Runner Up Renae Wahoup by Brodie Butler
My website and blog copped a fair bit of traffic around two particular occassions this year. It was the rise of Sam Schoers and Renae Wauhop when they hit our T.V screens on the amazing race. Renae of course being the Miss Universe Australia Runner up for 2011. I have photographed and known both these girls for quite some time so having previously featured them on the blog, caught the eye of all the internet searches from fans. See more here: Sam and Renae to race around the World on Channel 7
Perth singer Johnny Ruffo
The second and largest traffic spike was of course from Johnny Ruffo, the X Factor Grand Finalist. I had actually been working with Johnny for a long time on his first music video production which unfortunately had to be sidelined due to X Factor commitments. We did some great photos together though which have made their way all over the internet and I look forward to working with him again. Check out Johnny’s photos here: A day with local Perth singer Johnny Ruffo

Only 1 workshop this year! Well I have to say I’m very sorry to all those people that have been emailing me begging for another one. Finding time for the workshops is difficult. I still cant promise there will be one soon, but I can promise you that I am always thinking about where I can fit another one in. Stay Tuned!

Director A.J. Carter with DP Guy Livneh, Arnold Schwarzenegger & James Cameron
Certainly one of the most memorable moments for me was when a good friend of mine, Director A.J. Carter was hired to direct a piece featuring our childhood heroes James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger! While I unfortunately wasn’t there I did manage to get the whole scoop on the project and I must say provided a bit of technical help because the project was shot on the Canon 5DMKII which ofcourse is what I spend most of my time filming with! I spent a bit of time with the Director of Photography Guy Livneh and of course A.J. and put together an official behind the scenes post with all the technical bits and peices and with some photos courtesy of Rafael A Leyva. The resulting video went viral straight away and was a huge success, and the blog post I wrote went viral amongst the HDSLR filmmaking community which was good. Check out the exciting project right here: Filming James Cameron & Arnold Schwarzenegger with the Canon 5DMKII

Lastly, to wrap up this quick little reminiscing session, Its been another exciting year working with Top Shelf Entertainment. This year Top Shelf launched an amazing brand new website and I had a bucketload of photography and post production to do to fill the website. It was exciting for me because I got to explore my photoshop composite abilities a bit more and be a little more creative. Let me share a few photos with you to finish off the year…

All Male entertainment All Male Entertainment Perth all male entertainment Perth

There will be more of these released on the blog soon!

Finally I just want to send out a huge Thank You to my team and others that have been pretty influential in my photography/filmmaking this year.

First thanks goes out to Karl Pearce. An excellent shooter himself and an extremely helpful, thoughtful and very professional assistant.

Also to Jay Wells for the consistent motivation, inspiration and ideas. For the shoulder rubs, the witty remarks and for bringing me cider when its needed most. Thanks Jay you’ve been a tremendous help.

A new addition to the team that Id like to thank is Elliott Vassilla. I have been joining forces with Elliott on some film projects this year but he has also taken an interest in assisting me on photoshoots throughout the year too so thanks very much buddy I cant wait for the next project. I even made a n effort to spell your name right for once!

Thanks to Saul, Howard, Ash, Sam and the rest of the team from Camera Electronic for another supportive year and for also jumping on board a film as a sponsor and providing gear. If there’s anything you need call these guys.

A big thanks also to my fellow video shooters who contributed this year; Ross Wallace, Luke Brooks, Peter Clarke,Kieren Herrald

And finally a thank you goes out to Perth Film Network founder Debbie Thoy for believing in me and giving me an extra kick start in the film industry through a number of exciting projects.

I’m so worried about forgetting to mention someone, If I have forgotten you I’m really sorry and its my round, and maybe work harder next year so I remember. haha!
See you lot next year!

B.

UPDATE [See the full Behind The Scenes article on this project RIGHT HERE]

So last Wednesday(27th oct) I get an email from my friend and Director A.J Carter and he tells me about some secret project that he just got asked to direct the very next day but couldn’t tell me the details, he only wanted some technical suggestions on the camera side of things which I think his brilliant DP Guy Livneh later sorted out anyway.  He then later revealed to me after filming finished, that he was directing James Cameron & Arnold Schwarzenegger in a little short protesting against Prop 23. Prop 23 is a proposition funded and backed by a couple oil companies which will essentially gut current Californian environmental laws in a bid to relax pollution & clean air laws, causing health issues & destroying thousands of clean energy jobs.

So let me just quickly tell you about the campaign. Arnold and James have felt strongly for the environment for many years. Cameron has in fact donated a ‘substantial’ amount of money to help promote the ‘No on 23’ campaign already and wanted to finish off with a viral commercial with himself and Arnold. James’ love and concern for the environment has also been evident in several of his films including his latest film ‘Avatar’ which also touches on the central theme of environmental destruction.

So why on earth is he emailing me? Well.. apart from getting to work with more of Hollywoods finest,  as it turns out this job was to be shot on a Canon HDSLR! A.J. and I have worked together before on a number of occasions both in Perth (Australia) and in L.A./Las Vegas using these new hybrid cameras so he knew I would be very excited to hear that this project involved using a Canon 5DMKII.

The Director of Photography on to take charge of this project was Guy Livneh. Guy told me they decided to go with a HDSLR as the turnaround time for post production was much quicker with one of these cameras than say a RED at 4K. It suited the project. Guy also stated they chose the 5DMKII over the 7D due the sensor, as after tests he found the 5DMKII to have a more natural colour space and a smoother image over  the 7D.

Ronan's Escape

Ronan’s Escape, a short film by a close friend of mine A.J. Carter  (who is atually responsible for the very handy camera work in our latest glamour sensations video HERE) has just won another huge award over in the U.S. Ronan’s Escape picked up ‘Best International Short Film’ at the 6th annual Hollyshorts Films Festival, in Hollywood California.

Not so long ago the film also picked up the ‘Best Short Film’ award at the 2010 Sedona Film Festival in America too.  Not bad for a Perth film production eh? Yes thats right, lil ol’ Perth has the talent to do great things too.

A massive congratulations to A.J and his sister Jennifer, Luke and everyone else involved in the film, it was such a deserved win and so good to know all that hard work, blood sweat and tears was all worth it.  I hope the film continues it success and I look forward to seeing the next project!

Check out A.J’s website and blog here: http://www.ajcarterfilms.com/ and of course the website for the award winning short film, http://www.ronansescape.com/

You can see all the red carpet action from the world premiere of the film  which was right here in Perth and thanks to yours truly. See the photos I snapped on the carpet here: http://www.brodiebutler.com/blog/2010/03/shooting-the-red-carpet-for-the-ronans-escape-world-premiere/

Glamour Sensations Perth 2010 by Brodie Butler & Edward HorWell first up, let me just say.. Wow. I knew there would be a lot of effort involved in this little project but I think I under-estimated it a little bit. Almost 20 girls, all photographed over one weekend was certainly a mission and it took every ounce of passion, dedication and energy out of my whole team. I really hope everyone appreciated all the effort we went to, organising the locations, the assistance etc etc. Thanks very much to everyone involved. Thanks for coming over Ed, (EdwardHor.com) it was great shooting with a like minded shooter and seeing how you east coasters go about things. (P.S. Thanks for the Rode Microphones Cap haha!). Keep an eye out on his website folks there will be plenty of hot stuff to come from him in the very near future.

I think I can speak on Ed’s behalf as well when I send out a big Thank You to Karl Pearce and Jay Wells who were our pro-active trusty assistants for the duration of the weekend. It was tough on us but I know it was tough on you guys as well. The weekend really wouldn’t have succeeded without you guys. Good assistants are truly important to what we do.

The make-up artists did a great job too; Kierina Gaston, Priscilla Sue and Megan Clarke thanks very much for the support and your services.

To the girls who participated, thanks very much for coming. I know we have taken a bit longer than expected to get all these photos to you but we did our best. Things have been hectic and very stressful but we got there eventually. There was almost 20 of you remember! The feedback has been pretty good so far, and I look forward to potentially shooting with some of you in the future!

Ok ok ok yeah yeah I know you just want to see the pictures. Well here we go. Below are some of my favourite retouched photos that I took over the weekend for you to see. Feel free to drop your comments below! I’m happy to answer any questions you have as well. Behind the scenes video is coming soon!

Ronan’s Escape was written and directed by Australian film maker, A.J. Carter and was shot on 35mm and Super 16mm in the summer of 2008 and 2009 on location here in Western Australia.

The premiere took place at HOYTS Cinemas, Southlands as part of their local filmmaker initiative on 15th Feb 2010. Director and old friend A.J. was very keen for me to come down and take some red carpet snaps to give everyone involved in this project a little extra something to remember it by and to make the occasion shine a bit more. Sure! Why not?

Just before I babble on about the gear and setup I used for the photos, I need to throw in a quick CONGRATULATIONS. Ronan’s Escape has just won ‘BEST SHORT FILM’ at the SEDONA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (USA)! This is an incredible achievement and I’m extremely happy for the success of this film, and the recognition that A.J and his production team have received. The win was was well deserved. Check out the film at http://www.ronansescape.com/

Ok, now back to the premiere. I was very lucky that I wasn’t going to have to compete with 30 other blood sucking crazed photo-journalists to try get some good shots like you might see at a typical Hollywood premiere. This was on a slightly smaller scale.  I was going to be all alone to control the whole occasion. So straight away I knew I was going to be packing my quick and easy portable speedlight kit. It varies in contents but usually I’ve got my main body, the Canon 5D MK II, and usually a backup 30D lingering around somewhere. For the lighting side of things, I’ll squeeze in 3 or 4 Canon speedlights (with at least one 580EX to trigger the others) and a couple light stands, hotshoe adapters, and of course a couple of brollies to soften the light.  Thanks to Lowepro, I can manage to carry all that in one go. 100% wireless system, lightweight, and very portable.

Hit the jump to see how I shot the red carpet…

Fighter Combat International Calendar Photoshoot 2009

Fighter Combat International has a core mission of sharing the experience of military flying with the general public. Yes thats right, this is the closest you will ever get to playing Maverick and Goose with your friends in a genuine ex-military aircraft.  The pilots are generally former or current military flying instructors and their philosophy and procedures are based in the style of an air force squadron. This is Perth’s Top Gun.

So anyway, I received a call late last year from a mutual friend and  the call started out the usual way …

“Hey Brodie! Listen, a friend of mine needs some photos done…”

So as it turned out, Fighter Combat International (www.fciwa.com) needed a photographer to shoot an entire calendar for the year of 2010. That photographer was me obviously. I’ll save you from all the boring organisational nonsense but basically some ideas were thrown around, a bunch of phone calls were made, some plans were made, and before we knew it we had a date.  A critical part for this, was a location scout. The most practical and ideal location for this shoot was obviously the FCI headquarters. A hangar located at the Airport, where all the planes live. So I made a trip out there well in advance to scope out the location. I sussed out how much room we had to move, what lighting situations we were dealing with and how the light interacted with the surroundings. While I was there I took some sample photos to see if i could get some potential ideas brewing straight away.
