Right angle eye peice viewfinder

Right angle view finder

This little sucker is way overdue for me. I first saw the right angle viewfinder a couple years ago and I thought it was a good idea but it just never made its way to the top of the gear priority list. The genuine ones are rather expensive too which didn’t help the case.

Well with the increase in the amount of cars I’ve been shooting and the low angle shots I love to get, I finally decided to get one. The low angle shots I shoot usually involve me lying on the ground, which for some weird reason I have never really had a problem with. Now though, I dont have to lie on the ground anymore, and I tell you what I like that a whole lot more!  I can just sit down and look through my right angle viewfinder.

Canon right angle viewfinderCanon offer one known as the Canon Angle Finder C, but they are priced rather high. I like to buy genuine gear whenever I can but for something like this I resorted to the internet and picked myself up a cheap version to see if I actually like the idea and would actually use it. Turns out, I do like it, and I will definitely use it more.

I had to shoot a car for a magazine yesterday, and I almost did the entire shoot with the angle viewfinder on the camera. I just got used to it, and couldnt be bothered switching back and forth.

So anyway, if you find yourself always shooting very low angles, or shooting in tight spaces or up against walls a viewfinder is an awesome little goodie to have in the bag. It has a focus ring n it so you can adjust it for your own eyes, and most of them have a magnification adjustment to switch between 1x – 2x magnification. Very cool.

If you are in Perth then Camera Electronic will be able to sort you out.

canon 5dmkiii

If you have been living under a rock the past week or so you may have missed Canons announcement of the 5DMKIII. The very much anticipated camera has finally put all the rumours to rest and it looks like it will ship in just a few weeks.

This camera really appeals to me. They seem to have addressed a lot of things that I have been missing from the 5DMKII, both for stills and video. As a still photographer, this camera still appeals to me better than any other camera, but thats based on a number of factors we won’t go into, and not even taking into account the video side of things. I’m probably most excited about the 61 point autofocus which hasn’t really been updated since the original 5D, and the fact it accepts the same battery as the 5DMKII is a bonus because I already own a lot of them! On the video side of things though the ability to now shoot 50/60fps at 1280×720 is a big plus for me as I don’t currently own a camera that has it.  Having a 5DMKII in the bag is a perfect backup to support the MKIII too. I don’t care about anyone’s opinions on this camera, it fits me and my needs better than any other on the market and it’s impossible for you to argue that fact.

There’s plenty of other upgrades, check them all out below.

-22.3 Megapixel Full Frame CMOS sensor
-DiG!c 5+ Image Processor
-ISO 100-25600 (expandable to L:50 H151200, H2:102400)
-61-point high density recticular AF (up to 41 cross type points)
-6.0 fps for high continuous shooting.
-High Dynamic Range (HDR) Mode
-50/60p Video at 1280×720 (HD)

Fireman Photoshop Composite for Top Shelf Entertainment

Here’s another one for the ladies. This is Chris Skidmore from Top Shelf Entertainment being super cool by walking away from an explosion. (You must watch this – Cool Guys Don’t Look at explosions). The irony here of course is that he is supposed to be a fireman, running towards the fire, but we’ll forget about that minor little detail in this case. This was a photoshop composite created for the freshly built Top Shelf Entertainment website. It’s one of my favourite images and here’s a little bit about how I did it…

The lighting setup for the photo itself was identical to the setup for my Ninja Photoshop Composite featured on the blog not too long ago. The diagram below briefly explains the setup.

Lighting Setup for Fireman Composite

The main difference here is that I actually setup a grey background for the fireman image, which isn’t reflected in the diagram above.

Here is a before and after image giving you a better idea of how it was done. I decided to crop the bottom of the hose out since it looked rather silly not connected to anything, and I really wanted to get in as close to the subject as I could. Notice how I cropped him just below the knees. It’s always important to never crop a model subject at their joints as it looks really awkward.

Fireman Composite Before & After

Photoshop Composite Tip:

Now here’s one of the crucial secrets to creating composites that I see people miss out time and time again. It’s probably something you have wanted to be able to do but didn’t quite know how. The trick is, to match the colours between your subject layer, and your new background layer. Simple right? It is. You need to make sure your subject is going to fit in properly with the new environment and matching the colours of the two layers so they blend is the key to doing that.

Here’s a very brief run down on how to do it. Select your subject layer, in my case the layer with the fireman. Then go to Image -> Adjustments -> Match Colour.  Once the dialog pops up, you can select the source document and then the actual source layer which is going to be your new background layer! In the example below the name of my explosion/fire layer is “BG to match” so I could find it easily. You can see the preview of that layer in the little preview window to the right.

Then you can play with the sliders in the Image Options section to adjust how much it affects your image. Have a play with it to see what looks best. Thats it! It’s so simple, but very very effective and I don’t think I have ever done a composite without using it.

Hello from Japan!

Ok so I’m way way way behind on blog posts. I’ve been meaning to get a lot of content out the door but to be honest my experience in Japan has just been so incredible I haven’t found anytime to sit down and blog. Now this post is probably more of a personal post that’s going to yap on a bit about snowboarding and my trip. I definitely got some good pictures though attached below.

Burton Custom 162So this trip to Japan was purely a Snowboarding trip. Our sole intention was to seek out the best slopes and find the best powder that Japan had to offer. The list of destinations included Niseko (also known as the winter-bali due to all the aussies/tourists), Myoko-Kogen and also Hakuba where I am right now, which was home to the 1998 Winter Olympics. The best part about Myoko and Hakuba is all the different resorts we can go to so there is no shortage of new runs down the mountain.

This is my bad boy snowboard on the left. An older Burton Custom at quite a lengthy 162cm. Makes it hard to do tricks and doesn’t have much flex, but its great for pointing down the mountain and building up speed and it can cope in the powder sufficiently which I proved this trip. It’s a nice all rounder board. Unfortunately in Japan they don’t carry very long boards in stock so I was unable to buy the new board I wanted. May have been a blessing though because I’m not 100% sure about that board anymore after riding some similar boards over the last few weeks.

Johnny Ruffo Launches Official Website

You may have thought Johnny Ruffo would be forgotten after X-Factor finished but let me tell you that couldn’t be further from the truth. Johnny just finished a sold out tour with Reece Mastin and is working hard on an album which we will all see released soon I’m sure.

Now for the exciting news, my photography and film work has gone into the brand new official Johnny Ruffo website which you can see here: http://www.johnnyruffoofficial.com/

You will notice the main image is one of the photos I took of Johnny late last year (behind the scenes can be seen here).

The youtube video embedded in the webpage is the result of my filming work when they visited Perth on their Australian tour. I had two other shooters helping cover the angles and I spent most of my time on stage with Johnny using my Steadicam rig and a 5DMKII.

You can see the video here:

It was so exciting to be working on stage with my friends. Not only Johnny, but dancers Axel and Adel, and illusionist Adam & Selina Murby who made a guest appearance at the beginning. It was such an exciting two days. I’m so proud to see their success becoming a reality.

Alina wearing Love Vs Art

Alina has popped up on the blog a few times before over the years. She featured in one of my most popular posts of all time “Testing out the Elinchrom Ranger RX Speed AS Kit in bright sunlight“. She’s an amazing Perth model who I have worked with quite a lot and she has also modelled for one of my glamour workshops too. Anyway, here’s some fresh new photos taken just at the end of 2011 if memory serves me correctly.

Alina has started putting her creativity and passion for fashion into designing her own swimwear range which has been called “Love vs Art”. Alina sources all the materials and creates every piece by hand. I have to say it’s really good to see her enjoy it so much and I think that shows in the pieces she creates. Look forward to seeing more to come!

All these photos are obviously of Alina wearing her own swimwear. It was just a small test shoot really, but she still looks amazing!

Vin Diesel fan? Well the ladies certainly are and that’s exactly who Top Shelf Entertainment (TSE) are out to please. TSE are the dancing/stripping group from Australia who late last year hired me to shoot their entire arsenal of content for their new website.

Part of their business is doing themed dance/strip shows for various ladies nights and stage shows and this one above is for their Riddick theme.

Ok now onto the photography part. This was obviously a composite of a number of photos. Firstly we have the subject Camille who I photographed on a gray background and extracted out. The second image is the cracked grungey surface which was a stock image. The mountains in the distance were another stock image that I modified quite a bit to suit, and finally the night sky and planets image completed the composite. It’s a fairly simple composite just blending a few seperate images together and colour correcting the whole peice to fit together better.

For Riddick himself, I applied some detail enhancing techniques to get the most out of the image, accompanied with some light dodge and burning.

So I think this is a pretty good result  for a fairly simple approach. I had about 12 or so of these to do so I had to keep it as simple as I could.

International Model Jacinta Rockich

Jacinta and I have been meaning to work together for a very long time now having known each other from the beginnings of both our careers.  So a couple of weeks ago we managed to finally both be in town, and both had a bit of free time, so we made it happen!

I recruited Jacinta to be the new Perth Street Car Magazine feature model which will be in the April issue of the magazine, but on top of that we also had some fun in the pool and got a little creative with gelled speedlights, some smoke and a hose. The photo above is the product of  all that. I hope you like it!

THE LIGHTING SETUP:

This particular shot was taken with just 3 lights.

An Elinchrom ‘A’ Head fitted with a 100cm Deep Octa powered by my Elinchrom Ranger RX Speed AS battery pack was my main light. It was positioned front and centre just above the frame of the picture, and about a metre and a half in front of Jacinta.

On the left, level with jacinta was a 430EX Speedlight with an Lumiquest FXtra gel holder and a red gel placed inside. This was set to about 1/8th power. Directly behind Jacinta placed nice and high way out of frame was a Canon 580EXII on about 1/4 power. This 580 had a turquise hel placed over it and was aimed directly down at Jacinta and the water, firing through a beam of water being sprayed by a hose I mounted at the back of the pool.

THE POST PRODUCTION

As per usual I imported the images into Lightroom 3, and made my colour correction and white balance adjustments. I then used a collection to store a few of my favourites, this being one of them(above). So I then exported this image to Photoshop CS5 for some further adjustments.

I used some advanced frequency seperation techniques that I’ve customised to clean up the skin which took very little work on Jacinta. She has beautiful skin with hardly any imperfections.  I added the tinest bit of light to her eyes and lips to make them pop. The key with the eyes is to be subtle about it. A little make a big difference. The eyes are one of the most common mistakes photographers make in retouching photos.

I dodged and burned the highlights/shadows respectively for extra contrast and then applied a very gentle colour gradient across the image from left to right to complement the colours from the speedlights in the photo. Red to turqoise.  To finish it off I added some sharpening using a special technique with a mask. The mask allowed me to remove too much sharpening from places where I didnt want it such as the skin.

Fairly simple really, but done properly with a model like Jacinta and it turns out just superb!

Definitely more from this set soon!

1977 Toyota Celica GT4 3SGTE

This 1977 Toyota Celica GT4 is deserving of so much respect no matter what your preference of car. Neil has spent more than half a dozen years building this car and there hasn’t been a single part of the car untouched.  I don’t just mean the flashy paint job, the Work wheels and a nice engine swap to a Toyota 3SGTE, it’s all the little things and the attention to detail that really add up to complete the car.

Fast Fours Magazine January 2012

It’s hard to find cars still being built like this these days.

Last time I checked with Neil this was pushing out 340hp at the wheels which is a very decent amount of horsies at your mercy.

Anyway you can read all about Neils’ car in the latest edition of Fast Fours Magazine. I had the pleasure of shooting this car late last year and now my efforts are published and on the news stands for you to enjoy. It’s in the January 2012 edition and I think you’ll find its a good month to buy because there are two back issues included! Pretty sweet deal.

To the left is what the cover looks like!

Now i’ll leave you with a few behind the scenes photos from the shoot.

Before & After Photoshop Composite

This is one of my favourite composites that I did for one of my clients Top Shelf Entertainment. It was part of a series of images I had to do for the launch of their new website. Originally this photo wasn’t meant to be a composite, I was simply going to utilise the gritty concrete wall but after some further consideration we decided to turn these into some more creative and visually interesting composites!

Thanks to Photoshop, extracting someone off a background is fairly easy these days, but it still requires you to know what you’re doing and I’d definitely shoot it on a grey or plain background if I had the choice.

TAKING THE PHOTO:

So lets look at the lighting setup first. I had two big softboxes setup behind my subjects. They were 120 x 80cm sotboxes from a very old Visico studio kit I purchased years ago. being a location shooter I never invested any further in studio lights, I opted for battery powered packs instead. The lights these softboxes were attached to were also Visico, and were capable of about 400 WS each. These required power so I ran a couple extension leads to them from the kitchen of the warehouse we were at.  Now these two softboxes were my rim lights and I used softboxes so the light would wrap around my subjects a bit better. They were sitting roughly on a 45 degree angle to my subject.

Up front as my main light I had my Elinchrom Ranger RX Speed AS with one Action head firing through my  100cm Elinchrom Deep Octa rotalux softbox. I had it positioned fairly high and angled downwards.

Ninja Photo Composite Lighting Setup

I chose the 100cm Deep Octabox over the larger Octaboxes because for male models I don’t want the light to be too soft. If the light source is too large and soft then it will fill in all the shadows around the subjects muscles and you will lose all that definition that you really need!

Lighting Setup for Ninja Composite

CREATING THE COMPOSITE IN PHOTOSHOP:

Unfortunately I don’t have time to go into all the details but I’ll run through the basics. I started off by using some various techniques to extract as much detail from the photo as I could and then proceeded to clean up the image such as a lot of the creases in the clothing and also fixing the shoes.

To place my ninjas on a different background, I didn’t actually cut my subjects out. I used a different approach. An approach where there is no need for any pen tools or selections or anything like that. How did you put them on a different background I hear you ask? Well I actually used a much different technique which works really well but only if you take the photo correctly. I originally learnt the technique off a friend of mine, German photoshop guru Calvin Hollywood.  The technique makes use of the blending modes offered to us in photoshop, more specifically the overlay blend mode. If you can shoot your subjects on a 50% grey background or at least as close as you can get to that, you can use this technique.

In photoshop, place your NEW background on a layer, above your original photo with your subject. Then simply set the blending mode of this top layer to overlay.  Yep, that’s it. So easy! So all the grey areas in your original photo will now be replaced by the new background image, at least it will look that way. The best part about this technique is that it retains the shadows created by your subjects in the original photo. If you look at my final ninja image, the shadows from the two ninjas were from the original photo! Once you perfect this technique it saves so much time. Obviously it isn’t a solution all the time. In this particular instance it didn’t work perfectly. I never intended to use this technique so we didn’t have a nice grey background, it was a very textured light grey background. So once I applied this technique in photoshop, I still have to create a mask and just mask out a few bits of the new background so it didn’t block my ninjas at all. Still much easier than having to cut them out.

Once that was all done I added some subtle colour to enhance the image. I applied a yellow to blue gradient across the image to establish each ninjas territory and help emphasise how they are clashing together.  Finally some dodge and burning and some sharpening and it’s pretty much done.

Thats all for now…

Brodie.
