Category: workshop

Today I am putting my feelers out there in the Perth community to see if anyone is willing to help me locate some studio space (or any large office/warehouse space) for a 2-day workshop.  I know I’m well overdue to run another workshop and I’m very sorry but this is not actually for one of mine. This is actually for someone else far more exciting!  An international world renowned photographer/retoucher friend of mine is coming to visit Australia for the first time and he wants to visit little old me here in Perth. I can tell you first hand he was one of the most popular instructors I’ve seen at the Photoshop World Conference in 2010.

Now, Perth is an long and expensive trip to make for a single workshop, so it’s the same old “we have no budget” story. Usually in all the countries he has visited around the world he has been fortunate enough to have a studio provided or sponsored for him, however the one thing I don’t have is a studio.

We intend to run a two day workshop, consisting of shooting with different lighting setups along with a retouching session and presentation. We do need a bit of room to move and setup multiple lighting setups if possible. We also need the ability to use a projector and have table and chairs to fit up to 15-20 people. It would be held over a weekend. Originally it was to be late 2011, but it is likely to be pushed into 2012. The date is not set yet.

I would be very grateful and interested to speak to anyone that might be able to help me and I’d love to know if there is anything I could do for you in return.

I will release further details when we are a bit closer to a confirmation on the event going forward.

Please contact me by email on brodie@brodiebutler.com with details on you and your studio.

Brodie.

Canon Workshop with Darren JewMy friends over at Camera Electronic have arranged for another Canon workshop, this time with award winning nature and wildlife photographer Darren Jew.

I’m no wildlife photographer, but I know a lot of readers have interests in all kinds of genres of photography so I just thought this might be of some interest to some of you.

I find you always learn new things anyway and you find ways to apply them to what you do in other areas of photography.

Anyway, it looks like a good excuse to spend a nice day at the Perth Zoo and take a bunch of pictures borrowing some of the best gear you can get your hands on and with someone giving you guidance and expertise.

Click on the flyer for more information, and contact Camera Electronic on 9328 4405 to book.

You can also register on their website to stay up to date with all the workshops they arrange, including Nikon, Hasselblad, pentax and more.  Register for photography workshop updates here

Ralph Swimwear Model Carla Boggis at Brodie Butlers Photography Workshop

I managed to find some free time over Easter so I thought it was a perfect time to run a little Glamour Photography Workshop. I didn’t spend much time shooting as it was more for the students, but above is my favourite shot that I did manage to sneak in.  The model is Australian Ralph Swimwear Model of the Year Finalist; Carla Boggis who recently returned from the eastern states competing. Carla is a bundle of fun to work with and you can see some other photos I did with her on a previous post here.

This photo was taken with my 5DMKII and 70-200 2.8L IS lens. An Elinchrom Octabox is just off the camera left and slightly feathered to the right as my main light. A second light was off to camera right behind the couch which is giving us that highlight through her hair and on her shoulder. Then there’s the Canon speedlight on the floor behind the couch with a blue gel giving me that amazing vibrant blue colour on the curtains. Shot at 1/125th, F4.5 @ ISO100 racked out to 90mm.

The workshop was basically an insight into how I do what I do. We went through all the gear I use to create my images, covering everything from the Camera and lenses, to lighting and lighting modifiers.  We had a little crash course into using flash, and how to expose for it in different ways, and how I go about lighting my subjects. Then we just got stuck into shooting and I offered tips all along the way!

Big thanks to my trusty assistants Jay Wells and Danni Beaton for helping out.

Also thanks to Fab at The Dusk Lounge www.thedusklounge.com for letting us use the club.

Happy Shooting guys!

Vincent Laforet has popped up on my blog a number of times in the past, as he is someone I look up to in the field of HDDSLR filmmaking and he is quite the embassador for it.  He has teamed up with CreativeLive yet again to deliver what looks to be one very exciting workshop on HDDSLR filmmaking on the weekend of Fri March 4th to Sunday March 6th.  This workshop will build on the previous one, where he introduced us to the world of HDDSLR filmmaking and covered all the fundamentals and the gear available etc.  This one is a 3 day workshop and I highly recommend it. You will gain so much from it without a doubt.

For those that dont know what CreativeLive is… (getwiththetimes!) it is a Free, Live & Online classroom where you can learn from the best instructors around the world on just about any topic. Photography and filmmaking are two of those topics which probably has to do with famous photographer Chase Jarvis being one of the brains behind the whole operation.  You can watch live 1-5 day workshops in HD and if you miss anything you can buy the whole thing as a download for next to nothing.  It’s such a valuable training source.

Here’s the details for the workshop… http://creativelive.com/courses/hddslr-moving-still-video-vincent-laforet

Enjoy.

Daniel Lomax Shooting Jennifer Kirk at Brodie Butler Glamour Workshop

Well I’ve finally thawed out enough to write this post after a rather cold ending to our outdoor workshop yesterday. The workshop was excellent, it just got really really cold as soon as the sun set. The winds certainly didn’t help the cause. We were on the beach by the way, in case you hadn’t noticed from the photo above of Daniel Lomax taking a snap of our model Jen. I’m very happy with how the workshop went, the students got some amazing photos and I tell you what, I’m even jealous of a few of them. Well done all, it was great meeting you and I hope you took a lot away from the workshop to help improve your pictures.

2011 Ocean One Calendar Girl & 2011 Zoom TV Calendar Girl Jennifer Kirk was our beautiful model for the afternoon. Jen did an excellent job especially having to put up with the cold weather in the least amount of clothing of anyone there. Well done Jen and thank you for coming, I think you will be very happy with a few of the photos the guys took!

Also a massive thank you as always to my trusty assistants Karl Pearce and Jay Wells. This kind of thing just isn’t possible without you guys so thank you.

Jennifer Kirt at the Brodie Butler Glamour Photography WorkshopAfter the workshop, Jen & I decided to do a mini photoshoot of our own, experimenting with some coloured gels and I invited the workshop students to stick around and watch in the hope they might learn a little something extra. “Watch” for a photographer I guess now means standing with a camera to your face and snapping pictures away non-stop, so thats what they did. Might be good to see a Behind the Scenes shot but I’m pretty sure they weren’t pointing their camera anywhere near me! I don’t blame them.

To the left is a shot straight out of the camera that I took from our little after-shoot. I setup my Elincrom Ranger RX pack with just one light. That light had the 53″ Octabox attached to it for nice soft light which will make our model Jen look much more flattering.  I placed it to the right of camera a few feet out of frame. Then some handy reflector work from my assistant Karl who was just out of frame on the left, helped fill in some of the shadows on the left hand side of Jen. For the gels in the background I used a couple of Canon Speedlights. I used the Lumiquest FXtra gel holders and picked out a couple nice colours from the Rosco strobist gel kit. I had a little difficulting deciding on a colour but I actually quite like the result.

I switched to using the Yongnuo RF-602 wireless triggers for this shot because I like being able to slide the speedlights straight into the hot-shoe on the receiving triggers. And also because I didn’t have enough pocket wizards handy on the day. So there you have it! That was my bit of fun for the day.

Here’s a couple of snaps I managed to take behind the scenes at the workshop.

Hey folks!  Well as some of you may already know I run glamour photography workshops here in my home town of Perth, Western Australia and in fact we have a mini one happening tomorrow. I had intended to advertise this workshop on my blog but unfortunately for you guys it was booked out before I even had the chance.

I’m starting to get quite a lot of emails and interest regarding these workshops so I just wanted to make this post to let you all know, that there will be more! So don’t panic.  I highly recommend you follow me on twitter and facebook, because these are the first places you will see me post anything about any upcoming workshops.

If you like you can email me, and I will add you to my workshop mailing list which is probably the most guarenteed way you can stay updated.

As for the workshop itself, well you can rest assured that it’s not another one of those 2+ hour sit-downs where you listen to some self-obsessed photographer talking about how good they are. I get straight into it, I teach you all how you can take better pictures and I show you how I do it to the full extent.  I am very into my flash photography whether its Speedlights or powerful strobes and teaching lighting is one of the key elements.  I also tend to run a lot of smaller groups for more hands on experience shooting an amazing model I have arranged.

Anyway, have a good weekend! I’ll be making another post after the workshop is done. Maybe we will even have some video!

Perth Glamour Photography Workshop with Brodie Butler

Well my debut photography workshop is over and done with and what a great experience it was! In fact I think that can be said for both myself and the attendees. I have to admit it was a little rough around the edges but I was expecting that for a first go, and thats why I allowed more time to cover everything and cater for any glitches. Overall I was pretty happy with how it wrapped up and from the feedback I have received so far from the up and coming enthusiastic photographers that attended, I think were happy as well.  Thanks again to everyone who came along, and a big thank you once again to my in-destructable side-kicks Karl Pearce & Jay Wells, our amazing model & Miss Universe WA Finalist; Alina, and of course Josh & The Cottesloe Hotel for providing us the space to do it.

The workshop was obviously directed towards glamour photography and we touched on all areas of the genre and I shared a bit of my experience to go with it. I explained and demonstrated exactly how I prepare and conduct a shoot, and all the gear that I use to accomplish the final product.

The main focus was to learn off-camera flash and I think a few of our budding young photographers may have hit the deep end a little bit but I think thats good. We covered both small & big flashes and looked at a bunch of different light modifiers on both ends of the money-scale.

I think it was an excellent insight to see how things can be done, and it will give photographers early in their career something to work towards.

It was good to see the Canons out in force! We pretty much had a complete Canon workshop except for Phil, our lonely Pentax user, who due to some hot-shoe connection problems ended up using the Canon 1D MK IV that was available anyway.

Anyway hope everyone had fun. Alina has reported back to me that she thoroughly enjoyed herself and thought you were all very professional so I hope you will continue to conduct yourselves that way in future shoots.

Till next time.
