Ibizia Poster Photographer by Brodie Butler

Often when shooting for editorial purposes such as magazine or even for a lot of commercial clients, the shot you are going to take is much different to what you might normally take if you were shooting for your portfolio. When I shoot glamour for example, I like to fill the frame as much as I can and these shots are great for the client wanting personal photos or for a portfolio addition. Editors however,  often want blank space in photos so they have somewhere to put words, titles and whatever else. Commercial clients will often want this too so they have room to place their logos etc. Above is a good example of this. This is one of my favourite images that I took earlier in the year and it has been used in a flyer for BarOpen, a nightclub in Perth Western Australia. The designer George, from http://www.designintervention.com.au contacted me after finding the image on my website, and he thought it was a perfect canvas for his flyer.

I originally shot this image specifically for this type of purpose, and as you can see below, I myself have made use of it.  Please DISREGARD this flyer though as my Bunbury trip has since been cancelled. :(

So if you are starting to shoot for magazines and the like, just remember to be a little bit more creative with your shots and give the editors and designers more room to work with. Sometimes these shots can look really funny with all that empty space (or negative space) without the words and logos superimposed over the top, but you need to visualise what it will look like, and dont forget to take some normal shots as well!

Always take a LOT of pictures.
