So I own the 5DMKII camera because its simply the best camera for what I do. Notice the emphasis on “I”. You can read my Part 1 blog post on this topic right here.
So the Canon 5DMKII handles all my stills work perfectly and it is also my number 1 choice for my HDSLR video work.
I do not however, think that the 5DMKII is perfect for every job and for every photographer and even I use different cameras myself at times. Earlier this year I was shooting with a 7D for some stills work and it’s certainly an excellent camera, perfect for a backup. Then on a number of film projects this year I have been out shooting with the 1DMKIV as well as using it for a bit of action stills work. And get this, I have even used a Nikon!
Different cameras suit different purposes. For the majority of my work that I do, I have never been limited by the capabilities of my 5DMKII which tells me I dont need to change. By the way, when I’m using this camera for stills, I have the battery grip permanently attached to the body. I can’t live without it. However when shooting video, it’s always removed. mainly to get rid of the extra weight and make it easier to fit onto the assortment of video rigs I use.
The other benefit to this camera is that it is relatively inexpensive for a professional level DSLR, and it is extremely cheap if you look at it from a video perspective. If you think photography is expensive, try cinemaphotography! Professional video cameras and all the equipment that go with it is extremely expensive. So although it’s still a fair bit of money for most people, the 5DMKII is a relatviely cheap camera for a professional, which also makes it easier to have a backup.
I beleive in using the right tool for the job, whatever it may be, and in some cases I do need to use different cameras, but my 5DMKII is my number one goto camera 9 times out of ten. It’s a brilliant camera.
Happy Shooting folks.
B.
