You may recall this aggressive self portrait of me holding the basketball from a blog post I made back in 2009 (see the post here). It was taken as a dummy shot while I was testing a lighting setup for a shoot I was planning to do with my basketball team. Little did I know the shot would actually turn out pretty damn good, and a few clicks in photoshop later it was looking pretty sweet. So making sure you are prepared for a shoot is important, especially a commercial one, but sometimes you might get something you can use that you didn’t expect! Whats that got to do with the iPhone? Yeah yeah ok ok… In the image above the entire background image of the wall and the car was taken by my iphone. Pretty neat huh? The full res image doesn’t look half bad either.
Anyway, this time around, I was location scouting for an upcoming shoot with PIMPD Industries and we were going to be shooting their clothing label. (More on that soon). So we needed a location to suit, so what do I do? I head out in the car with my trusty iphone and scout. I don’t always have a DSLR on me. I’m not one of those crazy photographers that has their prized DSLR hanging on their shoulder 24/7. So for those times when I’m out and about, I always grab my iPhone out and snap away pictures of whatever landscapes, buildings, lakes, trees, roads and whatever other cool locations I come across. This is really handy because one day when I have that important shoot to do and I need a location, I just whip out the iphone and have a browse.
In this case, I was lucky to have a tip off from a friend Jennifer (thanks Jen!) about this location shown in the composite above. I headed out there one day, I grabbed the iphone out and snapped a couple pictures for reference. Perfect!
So I had a location, but now I wanted to do some mock-ups of the sort of post processing I wanted to apply to the end result pictures for this upcoming shoot. Gives me a sample to show the client and they can see what I can do. So I started playing with the iphone images so we had the exact background we would be using, I grabbed an old self portrait of me with a similar lighting setup, hammered it in photoshop CS4 for half an hour and whammo, I finished up with the image above.
Stay tuned for all the images and behind the scenes for the actual PIMPD Industries shoot.
